Sinkhole Forms Outside of President Trump's Mar-a-Lago Resort.
A 4 x 4 sinkhole formed out front of President Donald Trump's Palm Beach estate earlier this month. An excavator was called in to find the source of the sinkhole, and expanded the site to 10 x 6. The sinkhole was caused by a 7- to 8-foot long section of a storm-water pipe that collapsed about 5 feet under the ground, according to West Palm Beach City Administrator Jeff Green. Water from the broken pipe penetrated through mud and rocks, and eroded the ground underneath, causing the sinkhole. The pipe was installed more than 10 years ago.
Sinkholes are fairly common in Florida due to the warm climate and soft limestone sub-structure. The limestone is very soft and has holes like a sponge. Natural elements from rain and other ground water finds it way to the limestone, once this happens the sub-structure is jeopardized and becomes eroded. When the ground shits the foundation crumbles on itself, and can result in serious structural damage. Luckily utility crews were able to begin exploratory excavation quickly before any serious damage occurred. One lane was closed, but the road remained open.
President Trump purchased the club in 1985 for $10 million, and has spent millions of dollars improving the resort. President Trump has hosted numerous foreign dignitaries at the resort including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The club closed for the season on May 14th.
