Different Types of Drainage Systems

Drainage systems play a big part in our everyday lives. From rain, run-off, and shower drains are helpful when it comes to controlling water flow. A well-designed drainage system combats all water-related issues while still considering installation time and lifetime maintenance costs. When figuring out which drain is best for your needs, it's important to have a clear understanding of the different types of drainage systems available today.

Point Drains

These drains are probably the most familiar of all in this post. Point drains have a slope in the direction of the drain. They're commonly found in places like showers and baths. Point drains are sometimes used outdoors in areas with special topographical needs. This could be a sloped parking lot, for example.

French Drains

A french drain consists of a perforated pipe that is installed flat with a sloped trench. It moves runoff from high points down to lower points into a drain. These can be found in residential backyards to prevent flooding. They are also used in gardens to control water flow.

Trench Drains

Trench drain is more of an umbrella term. These drains are considered a surface system like catch basins. It is characterized by a large trench with a drain channel set in place, covered in concrete, with a metal grate on top. They take the water from the surface of the ground and through the channel, where it eventually reaches a final drainage point. They can be found around commercial buildings and along edges of a swimming pool.
