How Does a Residential Lift Station Work?

What is a lift station?

Lift stations are facilities designed to move water from lower to higher elevations through pipelines. They are used for pumping wastewater and sewage where elevation is not sufficient for gravity flow.

How it all comes together

A lift station has key elements to make it function: wet-well, pump and piping valves, junction box, and a control panel with an alarm system. The purpose of the wet-well is to provide means of allowing automatic operation with simple controls. They should be as small as possible in order to minimize length of storage of sewage.

What are the advantages of a lift station?

There are great advantages for having a residential lift station. The wet-well method is more cost effective than dry-well stations. Dry-wells are more suited for grey water and runoff while wet-wells deal with unpleasant black water. It is able to operate automatically and without regular maintenance. Lift stations are usually small and compact and can blend in with it's environment nicely.
